Hunting/Utility Knives

What a great knife this turned out to be! My friend Paul Letourneau of PML Knives and I were going to make this a collaboration. He came up with the profile, & sent it to me. Crucible CPM-3v is some insanely tough, wear-resistant stuff. I handled it with some great mystery wood from our firewood pile - pretty sure it’s curly ash.

This is a small utility knife design I came up with for a friend that went on photo safari in Kenya. The full-tang knife is ground from a Swedish stainless steel called Sandvik 19C27, offering great edge-holding and an aggressive, ‘toothy’ edge.

The handle scales are dense rosewood, with a single stainless steel pin.

The same design as that above, except with wonderfully figured curly koa.

A subtle iteration of the same profile above in 1/8” 1095 high carbon steel, but with a sculpted handle of African Moabi, a hard, dense wood with stunning curl.

A 4” hidden tang hunter in Talonite, an aerospace alloy which has extreme wear resistance, with a stainless steel guard and black G10 spacers, and a gorgeous red dyed curly maple handle from a good friend’s property in Vermont.

A 3-1/2” hunter in O1 tool steel, with black G10 guard and stainless steel pin and spacer, and stunning curly Vermont sugar maple.

A matched pair of 3-1/2” hunters in A2 tool steel, with black G10 guards and mosaic pins and stainless steel spacers, and bookmatched Claro walnut handles.

A small utility knife based on a Lloyd Harding pattern, in .130” thick AEB-L, tapered tang, hollow ground with curly Hawaiian Koa handle scales and copper pins.

Another version of the knife above in .130” thick AEB-L, tapered tang, hollow ground and Amboyna burl handle scales and stainless steel pins.

A pair of 3-1/2” hunter/utility knives in Crucible 154CM, with dyed and stabilized oak burl (top), and stabilized Goncalo Alves (bottom). A touch of sculpting toward the butt and the delicate finger grooves provide a secure grip without the added bulk of a guard.

This is a ‘chunky’ pocket utility in Crucible CPM3v, hollow ground, with an extremely thin tapered tang and stabilized cherry burl handle scales
